Do you backup your computer data? If not, you should read this. McDowell Mountain Ranch | Computer Repair
So just the other day I ran into a customer of mine whose hard drive failed on him; and in doing so took all of his data to its technological grave with it. The drive would literally not spin up and thus I was unable to recover it; leaving him with only one, extremely expensive option, to take it to a specialty shop which quoted him nearly $2,000 to get his data back. Sadly I had spoken with him on several occasions about backing up his data yet he never heeded my warnings and as a result was left with the difficult decision of whether or not his data was work 2 grand to him.
Unfortunately this situation could have been avoided with a very inexpensive and easy to implement and use option, remote online backup. What is a remote online backup? I’m glad you asked. It is a service provided by a third party company that you as a consumer or business owner can sign up for which allows you to backup all of your important data to secure off site server. In the event of a catastrophic hard drive failure (which happens more often than you may think) all of your important work files, family photos, music and so forth are easily recovered via the backup service. The service installs a small client application on your computer which allows you to manage your backups, and set up automated daily backups of your files.
Now a lot of people inform me they have an external hard drive or USB “thumb” drive which they backup their data to. However when asked the all-important question of “how often do you backup” the answer is usually something to the effect of “oh about once a month”. So what about those great family pictures you took last weekend? Or what about that important presentation you spent 12 hours on yesterday? Well…if you didn’t back it up and your hard drive decides now is an opportune time to go belly up, the files are lost to some black abyss, never to see the light of day again…much to your dismay.
So, if you are in the situation of not having some sort of automated backup and would like to see about getting such a thing setup, may I recommend either Mozy or Carbonite. Both provide you with an automatic, daily backup of your files for a very low monthly cost. If you have questions about either or any other options please, as always, do not hesitate to contact us.
