Technology | McDowell Mountain Ranch | Manage your finances with Mint.com
So the other week I was on my Facebook page and saw a post by one of my Brothers in regard to a website called Mint.com. His post read, and I quote “everyone should really be using Mint.com. No, my account wasn’t hacked by a spammer, it’s just a really awesome website.” Now, such a post may seem relatively general however this Brother just happens to be a business/finance major from Boston College, where he is presently pursuing a Masters in Law. He has always been a very bright guy so I figured what the heck…let’s take a look at this site he is so enamored with.
Now, I have heard of Mint.com in the past however I have to admit I never went to it. Having now done so I must say my Brother was completely correct in his statement that everyone should be using it. I have always desired a one stop shop so to speak for all of my online banking, accounts, loans, investments and the like and well…this my friends is just that The site is owned and operated by Intuit; the same company which makes Turbo Tax, Quickbooks and so forth. It is a completely free service you can sign up for and once signed up it provides you with the ability to import all of your financials into one easy to use interface. When I say easy, I mean child’s play. It is by far one of the most intuitive, straightforward and easy to navigate sites I have ever seen.
When you setup your account it steps you through importing your bank accounts, credit card accounts, investments, loans (auto, mortgage and so on) as well as property values, credit scores and more. Then it does a wonderful thing; it compiles all the information from all of your accounts, categorizes it in on screen and displays all of your current account standings as well as your net worth. In addition it allows you to setup budgets, provides you with spending alerts, displays your current investment portfolio holdings and their current values…all of this on one easy to read page. I know, this may sound way too good to be true. However it is and it works beautifully. It even provides you with a “trends” section to itemize your expenses and see on a very clear and concise chart what exactly you are spending your hard earned money on. The final icing on the cake is that they have a mobile app you can install on your Android phone or iPhone thus allowing you to keep an eye on your finances while on the go.
Now I am not finance major however I can say this; this site has made it far easier for me to manage my own finances. Having all of my accounts listed in one place providing me with a clear overview of everything makes staying on top of my expenses, budgets and what have you far more simplified. My advice to anyone looking to streamline their finances and manage their accounts more effectively is that they get an account on Mint.com. It is just another way technology can make your life easier.
