Well, here I am ~ Blogging…
For 35 years I forged a career path; upside down&sideways, onward & upward… and then, just when I was feeling established & settled, it happened ~ one big cross country move later, it was time to reinvent the wheel…
Someone asked me recently, “Why, books?” The “teacher” in me was quick to reply, “Books hold the keys to learning, language development, and a way to bond with your child”. It’s all true, but books can be so much more~ Books are to play with.. explore with.. dream with… at the very least, they make you think.
Love it? Hate it? One’s relationship with books & reading begins an at early age. What memories do you have?
Mine are actually few and far between; but books are a constant. Funny & silly Dr. Seuss, reading to my dolls and animals, playing Librarian, walking tall with a pile of books balancing on my head, trying to read allllll the books in a series, trying to read allll the pages of those “real” books ( ya know, the classics 🙂 I didn’t look to books as an escape, but they were a way to explore, have fun with the characters, learn… and so it went, full circle back around to my own children.
Do you have children? Did you read books with them? What do you remember about that?…What do they?
My kids loved their funny, silly books. Children learn about their world through observation & play. The repetition of play helps them to process their life experiences; so true with children’s stories…over & over (& over :)again.
I remember the “over & over” part, and the special “one to one” time, & being able to talk about things in the story; ask questions… and having fun times that were inspired by the stories. We made cookies because the mouse did, muffins, kites, fish print T shirts, funny voices & animal sounds because… because… because it looked & sounded like fun. It was!
I don’t know what they remember. I do know that they moved into their own homes with treasured books from the past…I know my 23 year old needed to see Where The Wild Things Are on opening day, needed to be Max for Halloween, and that he still owns that treasusred book.
In running Family Literacy programs I’ve seen first hand the way a book can transform a family from the chore of reading toghether to the joys; the way a book can inspire a game, other stories, shared conversations, recipes, other activities & experiences. So that is “Why books?”.
The next question is, “Why Usborne Books & More”? That answer is simple…
